(S.uralensis, S.arianus, S.sylvaticus, S.tauricus)
Sylvaemus uralensis,
Sylvaemus arianus, Sylvaemus sylvaticus, Sylvaemus tauricus,
Lashkova, E.I. Wood mice Sylvaemus (Muridae) from the
Ukraine fauna: geographic distribution, morphometric variation,
and identification. – Thesis submitted in Schmalhausen
Institute of Zoology, Natl. Acad. Sci. Ukraine, for obtaining
the degree of Candidate of Sciences (Biol.) by speciality
03.00.08 – zoology. – Kiev, 2003. Manuscript.
Individual variation and inter-specific
distinctions in four species of wood mice (S.uralensis,
S.arianus, S.sylvaticus, S.tauricus) from Ukraine
fauna has been studied. Both body measurements and craniometric
(including mandibular and odontometric) characters were
measured. Variations of separate characters and indices
as well as multiple trends in character sets variation
were analysed. Diagnostic significance of various characters
was studied using both univariate and multiple statistical
techniques. The borders of specific geographic ranges
were specified. Geographic gradients in variation were
described quantitatively. Variation in size and shape
has been analysed in its connection with growth patterns
and inter-specific allometry. Sexual dimorphism was also
described. The algorithms of species identification using
various combinations of characters (either external or
craniometric) have been developed. They can be used for
analysis of different specimens in particular strongly
damaged skull fragments (fossil findings, findings from
predator pellets etc.).
Key words: Sylvaemus uralensis, Sylvaemus
arianus, Sylvaemus sylvaticus, Sylvaemus tauricus, distribution,
morphometric variation, allometry, geographical gradients,
species identification, territory of Ukraine.
