abstract

A brief overview of the history of theriological research in Kyiv’s academic centres over the last 100 years, with a focus on the state of research during the existence of the Ukrainian Theriological Society. In total, the list comprises eight institutions and their departments, the central one being the Zoological Museum of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. It was on the basis of this museum that other institutions were formed, or from which (or its offshoots) other institutions were separated; the key ones today are the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) and the Institute of Zoology (IZAN) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The most powerful centre for the development of theriology in the post-war years and until the end of the 20th century was IZAN, which comprised four departments with a clear emphasis on theriological topics (ecology, morphology, faunistics, palaeontology) and four departments and laboratories with a marked focus on mammals (parasitology, nature conservation, game fauna, and the zoological museum). At the NMNH, these units became the Departments of Zoology and Palaeontology, which separated from IZAN in 1997. The key research areas of these departments and other institutions are examined.
