abstract

An attempt to see a scale of not only acquired but also lost relevant knowledge. In the old Kyiv prints references to mammals of the North were date back to the 12th century. Then there is an information gap, which new archaeological and ethnographic findings have only partially filled. From around the 18th century, people from Ukraine began migrating as far as Alaska, as evidenced by toponymic evidence. In general, from the end of the 18th c. to the present day, hundreds of thousands of PFU have visited the Arctic, including those fleeing Stalin's repressions. Almost about two thousand visited Antarctica. Only dozens were the theriologists. Some captains (Y. Lysiansky, I. Zavadovsky), and separate conscious whalers of ‘Slava’ and ‘Sovetskaya Ukraina’ also took part in the study. Among the prominent names were I. Pidoplichko, L. Portenko, M. Dikov etc. Despite the war, the contribution of Ukrainians to the study is becoming increasingly noticeable. Given Ukraine's distance from the polar regions, this is undoubtedly a phenomenon.
