abstract

The history of the formation and the current state of research institutions that have served as the main centers of theriological studies in eastern Ukraine are reviewed. The first such institutions and substantial works on the region’s mammalian fauna appeared in the 19th century. In the 20th century, this field of science developed actively, although it was associated with various socio-economic obstacles. The modern stage, which began in the 21st century, is characterized by new trends in nature conservation and the study of mammals. In 2014, and on a much larger scale in 2022, as a result of military actions, mammalogy—as well as the centers of relevant research and the region as a whole—suffered significant losses and disruptions. Despite extremely difficult conditions and numerous limitations, scientific activity, including studies of mammals in the region, continues.
