abstract

The first publications on the mammals of the Azov region appeared in the early 18th century, in connection with assessments of the damage caused by wolves to domestic ungulates. Intensive study of the regional theriofauna began in the early years of the 20th century. on the territory of artificially created forests and protective forest strips, the publication of A. Sylantiev 1898 became a landmark. After the creation of a zoological expedition at the Kharkiv University under the leadership of Prof. I. Volchanetskyi, other scientists took an active part in the study of mammals. They were joined by those from Donetsk, from Kyiv, Kharkiv and Moscow zoologists. The research of K. Filonov, who in 1963–1970 worked at the Melitopol Pedagogical Institute, was of great importance for the development of teriology. He left behind many students who became outstanding scientists. Quite a number of publications on the mammals of the region were prepared by zoologists from various universities and scientific centers. Among them is the team of the Zaporizhia University, which was managed by prof. V. Domnich. Many studies were carried out by scientists from the Odesa University, workers of the reserve ‘Askania-Nova’ anf others. Most of the works were published by Melitopol zoologists. Thanks to the involvement of foreign scientists, the genotypes of some ungulates and large carnivores were studied.
