abstract

A review is provided of the history of theriological research at the museum over the last 100 years, with a focus on the formation and development of the collections. The history begins with the collections of the Natural History Section of the Ukrainian Scientific Society, which in 1921 evolved into the collections of the Zoological Museum of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, which in 1934 was transformed into the Zoobin and, following a series of ‘intermediate’ institutions between 1939 and 1998, eventually became part of the NMNH. The collection is organised into several departments, including the Department of zoology (the main collection), palaeontology (fossils and the osteological collection of modern species), and geology (separate specimens). Information is provided on the collection’s growth over time. The collection is estimated to comprise around 20,000 modern specimens and an innumerable (possibly up to 100,000) number of fossils, especially isolated teeth of small mammals. Information on key researchers are provided, and the prospects for the collection’s development are discussed.
