abstract

Askania-Nova’s role as a centre for the collection of mammals and for conducting research into their acclimatisation, reacclimatisation, domestication, hybridisation and ecology dates back to the late 19th century. Several periods are examined: the Falfein period — up to 1918; research at the ‘Chapli (Askania-Nova)’ State Reserve — 1921–1932; the period when the zoo and steppe were under the jurisdiction of the Institute of Acclimatisation and Hybridisation from 1931 to 1989; and the most recent period — as the ‘Askania-Nova’ Biosphere Reserve (1989–2025). Its origins are linked to the collection and hybridisation of various mammal species. The results of these experiments are documented in monographs and hundreds of scientific papers and dissertations. Subsequent research has focused on the morphophysiology and behaviour of ungulates during domestication. At the same time, ongoing research was conducted in the steppe into the population dynamics and structure of small mammal species diversity. At the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, genetic research developed in collaboration with foreign colleagues, and at the beginning of the 21st century, ecological, faunistic and ethological studies came to predominate. With the onset of the Russian occupation, research has effectively been curtailed.
